TED 5

Robert Lang has changed the way we think about origami. These objects are each folded from just one square sheet of paper - no cuts, no glue! He uses mathematical principles to construct the most complex of forms.

TED 4

Charlie Todd adds a bit of joy to the world through his strange performances.

TED 3

This guy is amazing! Theo Jansen is creating new forms of life that will survive on their own.

TED 2

Today's talk is from a really rather well know designer Stefan Sagmeister.

"Things I Have Learned" by Stefan Sagmeister
  • Complaining is silly. Either act or forget.
  • Thinking life will be better in the future is stupid, I have to live now.
  • Being not truthful works against me.
  • Helping other people helps me.
  • Organizing a charity group is surprisingly easy.
  • Everything I do always comes back to me.
  • Drugs feel great in the beginning and become a drag later on.
  • Over time I get used to everything and start taking it for granted.
  • Money does not make me happy.
  • Traveling alone is helpful for a new perspective on life.
  • Assuming is stifling.
  • Keeping a diary supports my personal development.
  • Trying to look good limits my life.
  • Worrying solves nothing.
  • Material luxuries are best enjoyed in small doses.
  • Having guts always works out for me.
The images below are from this list (the yellow one is made up of ripe and unripe bananas.)

A TED TALK A DAY

I have been promising myself this for ages, just like I have been promising myself a 30 min swim a day and taking the time to enjoy cooking the evening meal rather than just rushing through feeding hour. It's an imperfect world in which none of us have the time to do all the things we want to.

However, for just one week (seven days, starting today) I will post the link to an interesting TED talk. This is doable.

Today Vik Muniz wins. This is an image from his series entitled "Sugar Children".

Paper Wars

The paper wars have begun again just outside my office door. The narrative and the abstract are battling it out. Here are some pics of the first works by my 2012 fourth year students. D.K. is mastering the tessellations of paper while Karla is free form playing with narrative.
In addition, watch this great TED Talk by Beatrice Coron on her experience of paper cutting.
